SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable)

SFP ( Small Form-Factor Pluggable ) is a kind of module, which is commonly used to terminate gigabitethernet traffic with a copper or fiber optic cable. Because of SFP can work both with copper and fibre optic , it adds flexibility for the network design.

1000BASE-T SFP can work with Category 5 or 6 cables and can work up to 90 – 100 meters lengths.

1000BASE-SX SFP can work with multimode fiber optic cable and can work on the links up to 560 meters.

1000BASE-LX/LH SFP can work both with single mode and multimode fiber optic cables.These SFPs can work up to 9000 meters with single-mode , and 500 meters with multimode fiber optic cables.

1000BASE-EX SFP can work with single-mode fiber optic cables and carry the traffic to the long distances up to 40 kilometers. A 5 dB attenuator must be used between fiber and receiver port.

XFP is a kind of SFP which supports 10 gigabit traffic for the uplinks.
